Account setup

Before using any equipment in the Materials Characterization Lab (MCL), all users must create a billing and scheduling account through HSC Cores. On-campus users use a University of Utah chartfield number which acts as an account number; all others are off-campus users.

To set up a user account, fill out the On-Campus Work Authorization Request on the Cores website.  Under “Authorized Individuals” at the bottom, add all project members who may use the lab and have the same chartfield, including yourself. When you fill out the appropriate form completely, the last line on the page that says “complete form to submit” will turn from red to green and you will be able to submit. You must fill out a new work authorization form for each grant.

Once you submit a work authorization form, your PI and the accounting contact will get an email message with a hyperlink to approve or deny the work authorization. The link is active for 72 hours. If both the PI and the accounting contact don’t respond within 72 hours, then you will need to resubmit the form. After approval, the Cores administration office will process your information. Within 1-2 business days, you can log in with your UID and CIS password.

After approval, the Cores administration office will process your information and send you an email with username and password information that will allow you to schedule equipment and place orders.

Using your account

To log in and schedule time on an instrument, go to the HSC Resources Login at the top of the Cores website. Once you have logged in, you will see a page that will allow you to select various University of Utah Services. The MCL is in blue near the middle of the screen. Lab news and machine information are shown on the following screen.
